On the left bank of the Stur valley, in the Gutâi Mountains - an open quarry for the extraction of a unique andesite.
Blidar Quarry lies about 25 km from Baia Mare, on the left bank of the Stur valley. Access is via the paved Baia Mare–Firiza–Blidar–Poiana lui Dumitru road, a mountain route through the forest.
The Blidari exploitation perimeter has long been known for the quality of its blackish andesite, used for decades in cladding, foundations and exterior works across the whole region.
Within the Blidari exploitation perimeter we find a pyroxene-basaltoid andesite: fresh, with porphyritic structure, blackish in colour and compact in texture.
The rock tends to split into horizontal slabs 1–16 cm thick, in the form of sheets (slabs) that build up parallelepiped columns. This natural splitting is why Blidar slabs have their characteristic shapes and thicknesses - they are not the result of industrial cutting, but of how the rock separates on its own.
Andesite is non-hygroscopic - it does not absorb water. This property makes it excellent for grilling meat, fish or potatoes on slabs cut to size on the saw.
Slabs are extracted by hand by teams of workers who follow the natural cleavage planes of the rock.
The quarry is equipped with modern blasting, loading and transport machinery for larger volumes.
An on-site 60-ton weighbridge for accurate weighing of loaded products at the quarry gate.
From the extraction and processing of Blidar andesite we obtain:
All products carry the registered trademark PLACAJE DE BLIDAR and are sold ex-quarry. Any products found in other locations are not PLACAJE DE BLIDAR.
